Nederland als voortzetting van de Republiek der verenigde Nederlanden (1559-1795) heeft in de franse tijd vier staatsvormen gehad: de Bataafse Republiek (1795-1801), het Bataafse Gemenebest (1801-1806), het Koninkrijk Holland (1806-1810) en integraal onderdeel van het Franse Keizerrijk (1806-1815)
De Bataafse Republiek (1795–1801), in de toenmalige spelling Bataafsche Republiek, was een republiek die het grootste gedeelte van het huidige Nederland omvatte. De republiek was gevormd naar voorbeeld en met militaire steun van de Franse Republiek, waarvan de Bataafse Republiek een bondgenoot en de facto een vazalstaat was. Deze steun werd duur betaald: de Republiek moest tientallen miljoenen guldens betalen voor de Franse troepen die in Nederland gelegerd werden (Verdrag van Den Haag). Ook later bleek de 'coalitie' met Frankrijk nogal eenzijdig. In hun strijd tegen de Engelsen en bij daarop volgende vredesonderhandelingen waren de Fransen maar al te graag bereid om in ruil voor toezeggingen van Engeland Nederlandse koloniën af te staan.
Het Bataafs Gemenebest (1801 - 1806) (in de toenmalige spelling Bataafsch Gemeenebest) was een republiek die het grootste gedeelte van het huidige Nederland omvatte. De republiek was gevormd naar voorbeeld en met militaire steun van de Franse Republiek, waarvan het Bataafs Gemenebest een bondgenoot en de facto een vazalstaat was. Het Bataafs Gemenebest ontstond na een grondwetswijziging in de Bataafse Republiek, waarbij de staatsinrichting drastisch werd gewijzigd. In sommige publicaties uit die tijd, ook van de overheid zèlf, werd zowel over de Bataafse Republiek als over het Bataafs Gemenebest gesproken.
Het Koninkrijk Holland (toenmalige spelling: Koningrijk Holland, 1806 - 1810) was een vazalstaat door Napoleon Bonaparte opgericht voor zijn derde broer, Lodewijk Napoleon Bonaparte.
Het Franse Keizerrijk (1804-1814/1815), ook bekend als het Grotere Franse Keizerrijk of Eerste Franse Keizerrijk of Napoleontisch Keizerrijk, was het keizerrijk van Napoleon I van Frankrijk. Het was de dominantie van Frankrijk over een groot deel van het vasteland van Europa in de vroege 19e eeuw.

The Batavian Republic (1795-1801) was a republic that included most of the current Netherlands. The republic was formed after the example and with military support of the French Republic, the Batavian Republic an ally and de facto was a vassal state. This aid was paid dearly: the Republic had to pay tens of millions of guilders for the French troops who were stationed in the Netherlands (The Hague Convention). Also, it turned out the "coalition" with France was rather one-sided. In their fight against the British and subsequent peace negotiations, the French were only too willing to give up in exchange for promises of England the Dutch overseas territories.
The Batavian Commonwealth (1801 - 1806) was a republic that included most of the current Netherlands. The republic was formed after the example and with military support of the French Republic, which the Batavian Commonwealth ally and de facto was a vassal state. The Batavian Commonwealth arose after a constitutional amendment in the Batavian Republic, in which the constitution was changed drastically. In some publications of that time, including the government itself, the names Batavian Republic and Batavian Commonwealth were alternatively used..
The Kingdom of Holland was a vassal state created by Napoleon Bonaparte for his third brother, Louis Bonaparte.
